Craked iPhone 4? No Problem!

I'm a "no-case guy" when it comes to the iPhone.  I like the sleek feel and way it fits into my pocket.  The iPhone 4 is made of glass ... very cool, but glass shatters when it hits a tile floor from 4 feet.  Ouch!  Here is my broken iPhone with some clear packing tape to hold the pieces together.

Lucky for me the phone still worked, so a quick search on "cracked iphone" and I discovered iFixIt.com and their video showing how to replace the back panel.  It took me longer to identify the type of screw head in my phone than it did to actually replace the panel.  It's that easy!

I went for the clear panel since it only cost $29.99 vs. $79.99 for the OEM black panel.

Here's the iPhone 4 with bakc panel removed.

Good Samaritan orphanage for handicapped children in Honduras

The following is from my friends Dwight & Gayle Aspinwall.

Boysandjosue

Dear Friends and Family,

Gayle, the boys and I had the opportunity to visit "Good Samaritan" orphanage for handicapped children in Honduras for the seventh time this past year. The visit was a highlight as we were able to share with the children who continue to remind us that happiness is found in very simple ways. These include the uninhibited smiles as we approach, their enjoyment of listening to music from a small transistor radio, the excitement of a 16 year old boy as he guides three boys to the back patio and wheels around the corner to show them a lizard living in the large tamarind tree. The pride of a 10 year old able to write "la, le, lo, lu, li" in beautiful neat hand writing, an 8 year old demonstrating the arm movements she is able to make with help from her physical therapist, the blind girl who hangs on to her best friends arm, this mentally challenged friend, who guides her through the corridors and patios sharing a closeness and trust seldom seen.

We are writing to ask that you help us fund the construction of a new building now nearing completion. The building will house ten additional children beyond the current 70 as well as provide a home to 25 elderly homeless women.  Your donation will purchase windows, doors, toilets, sinks, faucets, door handles and kitchen amenities.

The walls, ceilings and floors are up thanks to generous donations from Hondurans and other groups.  However, funds are becoming more difficult to raise and your contribution would help greatly. Please make a donation today at http://www.friendsofgoodsamaritan.org/donate .

If you would like more information regarding the "Good Samaritan" orphanage, please visit: http://www.friendsofgoodsamaritan.org. This orphanage continues to be the focus of our giving funds, we are passionate about these children since we walked in to meet them in 2006. Your donation funds will go directly to the children's home.

Thank you,

Dwight and Gayle

Some big voter numbers on FaceBook

I-voted-fb

Tonight FaceBook added a widget that let people show their friends that they voted. A remarkable number of people clicked the little I VOTED button ... more than 11 million by 11PM EDT. In the 10-15 minutes it took to grab this screen shot and send off a couple of emails, more than 100,000 more people clicked the I VOTED button.

Whatever you think of FaceBook, this is great example of social media & the web being good for democracy.

No Internet?

No joke, my friends have a computer that is not connected to the Internet. They even have two teenage daughters. Go figure.

Here are some more photos from the great Connecticut River pumpkin harvest.  A spectacular fall day.  We collected about 50 pumpkins from the river and saw a pair of Bald Eagles.
